Even though stand up paddling seems like a new arrival on the surf and paddlesport scene, its’ roots run deep into Hawaiian surf history. Stand up paddling was first regularly practiced in the 1950’s when Waikiki “beachboy” surf instructors employed outrigger canoe paddles and oversize boards to watch over their guests and to take photographs.

Stand up paddling experienced a renaissance in the early 2000’s as a fitness training and exploration activity in times of flat surf but it wasn’t long before “beachboy” style surfing was rediscovered and stand up divisions were incorporated into surf events and races by some of the most well known Hawaiian surfers. Outstripping its’ genesis as a surf sport, stand up paddling has become perhaps the fastest growing water sport in the world as an inspiring and fun way to “walk on water” and discover the adventure of our ponds, canals, lakes, rivers and coastlines!
